How the 2D Fit Calculator Works
The Fit Checker evaluates whether an item (with given width and height) can be placed entirely inside an outer container (such as a parcel box, drawer, or luggage compartment) while honoring a designated border clearance margin.
Direct Orientation vs Rotated Fit
An object can fit in either its original orientation or rotated by 90 degrees:
- Direct Fit:
(item.width + 2 × margin ≤ box.width)AND(item.height + 2 × margin ≤ box.height). - Rotated 90° Fit:
(item.height + 2 × margin ≤ box.width)AND(item.width + 2 × margin ≤ box.height).
Why Safety Margin Matters
In the real world, rigid objects cannot slide into containers that match their exact theoretical dimensions. Extra clearance margin is required to account for:
- Protective Padding: Bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, or protective foam (typically 10 mm to 25 mm).
- Finger Clearance: Space to grasp and lift the item out of a deep drawer or box without tilting.
- Manufacturing Variance: Slight bends, seams, or corner radii in cardboard and plastic bins.
